Ashton gets a hat trick of National awards

The successful development at West End, Ashton Under Lyne who won a National “Silver Green Apple’ Award in summer, has recently been awarded with two national awards - the ‘Building for Life’ Silver Standard (which reached the final stage of the National ‘Building for Life’ Awards) plus has won the top ‘Gold’ Award in the National Home Improvement Council Awards for the ‘Best Brownfield building project.”

The Regenda Group, a leading independent North West housing and regeneration organisation, were presented the opportunity to develop this derelict brownfield site by Tameside MBC for a new build housing project for local families.

The area is undergoing a regeneration programme and the site which has been derelict for a number of years has been transformed to provide a range of two and three bedroom homes which were designed to incorporate many eco-friendly technologies and is characterised by its colourful and distinctive ‘chimney stacks’ which allow light into the internal hallways. The development has also achieved ‘Very Good EcoHomes” accreditation and Secured by Design accreditation.

Martin Davies, Director of Development at The Regenda Group said. “We are delighted that this innovative scheme in Ashton Under Lyne has not only been awarded such an array of awards but has also been shortlisted for another three awards throughout the year.

It is an excellent achievement to be recognised for the use of environmentally friendly design elements being used in the development of the site, with the homes benefiting from a range of energy and water saving measures.

The development has set a standard for regeneration in the area and we hope it will become a benchmark for future developments in Ashton Under Lyne.”

Wayne Hemingway MBE, designer and chair of Building for Life said: “Living in a housing scheme which has been well designed adds to quality of life. Good design can provide opportunities for social interaction, opportunities to get outside and do things, opportunities for children to enjoy their environment and an uplifting place to come home to. It also helps to know that in tough times it will hold its value better than a badly designed scheme.”

Jim Davies, Housing Renewal Manager at Tameside MBC said “I am pleased that the Regenda Group has won this range of awards for this development in Ashton.  The Council and Regenda have worked successfully in partnership for a number of years on a major regeneration scheme in the West End area of Ashton under Lyne, and this award recognises their commitment to the environment and to their tenants.

Tameside Council is keen to work with organisations, like The Regenda Group, who show a willingness to move with the times, dare to be innovative and who invest in the community”.

Frank Olchoski, Director at Denovo Design Architects, who designed the scheme for The Regenda Group said, “We are thrilled to have won and been shortlisted for such high profile national awards, which celebrates our commitment to environmentally conscious design.

This regeneration project, as with all architectural design projects, was intrinsically a juggling act on so many levels - but with good teamwork and close liaison with the local community, a quality and diverse development has been created. We are thrilled that our commitment to the environment and to the community ethic is now being recognised and rewarded in this way.”
